Living in the aftermaths – Workshop

On 23-24 April 2026, project PI Chris Sandal-Wilson travelled to Rijeka, Croatia, to attend an international workshop – ‘Living in the aftermaths: trauma, politics, and survival in Yugoslavia and successor states, 1945 – present’.

The workshop, wonderfully organised by Prof Ana Antić and Dr Goran Mijaljica, brought together scholars working across a range of disciplines to explore how war-related psychological distress was experienced, narrated, debated, and reframed in Yugoslavia in the second half of the twentieth century.

The workshop was an excellent opportunity to learn more about new directions of research in relation to memory, cultural representation, and trauma – including the intergenerational transmission of trauma. While focused on the case of Yugoslavia and its successor states, the themes for discussion were rich and resonated strongly with many of the wider questions and aims of the Psypartitions project.

A particular highlight of the workshop was a panel on war, survival, and everyday life with Emina Zoletic, Marija Krgovic, and Sofia Poulia, presenting on their ongoing doctoral research and representing the very exciting future of the field.

We hope many of the conversations will continue – thank you to Ana, Goran, and to all the participants for such an outstanding workshop!
