Fieldnotes from the Geneva archives

Early in March 2026, project PI Chris Sandal-Wilson undertook one of the first overseas research trips of the project.

Chris travelled to Geneva to conduct research at the archives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. With the kind assistance of archivist Camille Meyre, Chris was able to consult files relating to the ICRC’s humanitarian work in multiple partition contexts across the century, suggesting promising directions for further archival research in future visits.

Chris was also able to visit for the first time the archives of the Lutheran World Federation, where archivist Stéphane Gallay very generously facilitated access to files relating to the organisation’s work around the time of the partition of Palestine in 1948.

As the project progresses, these and other archives will contribute to understanding the interaction between international humanitarianism, psychiatry, and partition across the century.
